Business of Excellence Smoking Cessation Program
The youth-led Magic Valley Tobacco Free Coalition is sponsoring a program for businesses that will help make the Magic Valley a healthier place to live and raise a family. The Business of Excellence program has been established to encourage businesses to make their work environments tobacco-free within two years and to help their smoking employees kick the habit.
Local business members can partner with the Magic Valley Tobacco Free Coalition and concerned community residents to jointly develop a plan to create a smoke-free environment. Four criteria must be met to be considered a Business of Excellence:
-
Promote initiation of and on-going support for youth tobacco free coalition efforts.
-
Promote FREE tobacco cessation classes to employees.
-
Become a smoke-free work environment within two years.
-
Educate employees on the negative effects of tobacco products.
Youth coalition members are available to help businesses meet these four criteria. Business of Excellence participants are recognized for their commitment to improving the health of the community. Organizations that complete the above criteria will receive a plaque for display in their facility.
The toll of tobacco on our communities goes beyond the deaths of our loved ones. Each person who dies from smoking loses, on average, 12-15 years of productive life. In 1993, medical costs in the United States for smoking-related illnesses were more than $70 billion. And those who smoke affect those around them. More than 60,000 adults who do not smoke will die each year from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke). More than 8,000 new cases of asthma are exacerbated each year by environmental tobacco smoke. Problems like these touch everyone in our community. Large-scale tobacco control programs, which include community-based activities, have been shown to be effective in reducing tobacco use.
